CSU Football: Top 10 Plays from the new recruits

Is there anything more useless than high school highlight videos? They’re always grainy and shot from the top of a stadium. They start with a couple good highlights and then devolve into a bunch of mediocre plays. And the worst part is that there is no context for what is happening and they always leave me with more questions than answers. Is the recruit playing in a big game against a good team? Did the play come in the clutch or in garbage time? Why are there so many 5’8 white kids on the field?

Probably the worst highlight video of all time is Joe Di Caman’s, which is just two and a half minutes of him destroying a bunch of tiny, frightened Canadians. (Another unfortunate by-product of that video is that I can’t watch the Rams play without thinking “GO AND GET THAT ICE CREAM!” every time he comes in.)

With that said, I sat through all the YouTube videos I could find and picked the best plays, so you didn’t have to. Below is the Top 10 Plays of the 2013 Class and my breakdown.

(And if you still feel like watching full videos; I recommend Elroy Masters for his Brandon Marshall-moves and Jersey Shore fist pumps, and Tyree Simmons who played RB, WR, CB, and KR. He looks like the best athlete in the class by far.)

10) Nick Stevens Touchdown Pass- Not the most exciting play in the world, but I have a feeling this is the type of throw we’ll be looking for with our new 6’4 receiving corps.

9) Sammie Long Touchdown Catch- We haven’t had a player capable of this type of catch since Kory Sperry.

8) Josh Lovingood Touchdown Catch- Decent grab in traffic, but this highlight earns extra points because it was on TV and you can actually see what’s happening. I also enjoy that the team is called the Broncos and have a Colts logo on their helmets.

7) LaRyan King Tackle- Lineman videos are the most boring to watch, but this play was nice to see. King bursts through the line and stops the back for a loss. He looked like the Kool Aid man busting through a wall. OH YEAH!!!!

6) Bryce Peters Touchdown Run- Peters breaks this run from about 80 yards away. He had a couple of these in his video, but I picked this run because of the windmill-swinging of his arm and the constant threat of getting caught from behind. Reminded me of Gartrell Johnson.

5) Rashard Higgins Touchdown Catch- 80-yard touchdown on what looked like a broken play. Would be nice to have a receiver that helps the quarterback out and get open.

4) Elroy Masters Touchdown Catch- Grab the ball, punch a guy in the face, touchdown, fist pump. I really hope he turns into a player for CSU.

3) Tyree Simmons Punt Return- This was his second punt return touchdown of that game. Like I said before, it’s worth watching his entire video. When the punt returns come up (at about 3:50), watch the punter. After the first TD, he throws a temper tantrum in the endzone. On the second TD he gets demolished by a blocker and writhes around on the turf in pain or frustration. Or both. High school football is hilarious.

2) Justin Sweet Hit- This play happened when his high school was playing nationally on one of the ESPN family of networks. Fun fact: #16 died later that night.

Okay, he didn’t.

1) Kapri Bibbs Touchdown Run- Could it be anyone else other than Bibbs? We’ve been waiting years for this kid! Really, there were dozens of highlights to choose from, so I just picked the longest run I could find.

CSU Football Recruiting Battles

One of the things I like to look at most with new players is who they received other offers from. Below is a graphic that shows FBS schools that offered athletes who committed to CSU instead. The larger the logo, the more times we beat them:

As we can see, CSU got the upper hand on Nevada more than any other school. The Rams also had success against Air Force, Wyoming and New Mexico; crucial if CSU wants to dominate the region. It was also nice to see UC-Boulder’s logo so large as CSU beat them for more recruits than usual.

My biggest surprise while compiling this? Georgia State is in FBS. Who knew?

Here is the breakdown by school:

School Player(s)
Nevada (5) Lovingood, Masters, Robinson, Sweet, Colorito
Air Force (4) Berk, Goldtich, Masters, Nowland
Colorado (4) Goldtich, Nowland, Robinson, Colorito
New Mexico (4) Masters, Peters, Robinson, Sweet
Wyoming (4) Bennett, Goldtich, Masters, Nowland
Army (2) Masters, Peters
Miami Ohio (2) Clyburn, Peters
SJSU (2) Masters, Robinson
Texas State (2) Foster, Peters
UNLV (2) Masters, Sweet

Disclaimer: Offers can’t be confirmed or denied by the schools involved, and not all offers are created equal; so take all of this with a grain of salt.

CSU Football Recruiting Map

With the 2013 class taking shape, it’s interesting to take a look at where they come from. Below is a map showing all of CSU’s classes from 2008 to 2013:

The first thing I noticed was CSU’s entrance and exit from the Florida recruiting scene. It is painful to watch.

2013 had recruits spread across the map, with a little concentration in Colorado and California. The staff didn’t have the best results in Texas with only two commitments (not counting Brett Jordan). I’ll be curious to see if that continues in 2014.

Grading the 2008 Class: D for Disaster.

As we get closer to signing day, everyone is going to debate the merits of the new recruits coming into Fort Collins. But the truth is that we won’t know how the 2013 class stacks up until a couple years from now.

With that in mind, now is a good time to look back at the class from 2008. All but one player has finished their career at CSU. If you’ve ever wondered, “how did CSU football get so bad?”; here is your answer. This was the offseason where Lubick was fired and Steve Fairchild came aboard. It is typical to have a down recruiting year during a coaching change; but no one could have guessed it would be this bad.

Please note that I’m grading these players on the curve, against each other.

Grade A:

Scott Albritton, LS- He was an incredibly dependable long snapper over the course of three years. If it weren’t for him, many of our punt attempts could have gone horribly awry . My only knock on Albritton was that embarrassing onside kick he attempted versus BYU. It went about three yards and then out of bounds. I can’t find the video, but if you saw it; you know what I’m talking about. Long snapper attempting an onside kick. Only Coach Fairchild.

Jordan Gragert, OL- Jordan greyshirted, then redshirted, and finally played in 10 games as a reserve during his RS-Freshman year. Started every game for the Rams in his sophomore and junior years. Depending on how his senior season goes; Gragert will probably end up as the gem of this recruiting class. Let that sink in for a moment.

Momo Thomas, CB- This poor guy was constantly on an island due to CSU’s lack of pass rush and terrible defensive schemes. He would have probably been a pretty good nickel back at a school with a better defense. Didn’t play much because of injuries, which should drop him a couple letter grades, but just wait until you see the players I’m grading him against below.

Zach Tiedgen, DL- Versatile player who played across the defensive line and saw a ton of action after redshirting out of high school. Was building serious momentum towards becoming an impact player until a serious knee injury knocked him out. He was playing basketball. Tiedgen should probably be a “Grade B”, but I’m bumping him up because of the Rams Pointe arrest. That was awesome:

The good, bad and ugly for CSU recruit Kiel Robinson

The Good: Goldandgreennews.com reported that CSU got a verbal commitment from OLB/DE Kiel Robinson. Robinson has multiple offers from peer programs, so this is a nice get for coach Jeff Hammerschmidt and CSU.

His YouTube video:

The Bad: Robinson isn’t exactly the firmest commit we have. In fact, he still has a couple visits coming up: January 11th at Nevada-Reno and January 18th at Colorado-Boulder.

In recruiting, it’s difficult for us common folk to know what’s really going on behind the scenes, so it’s fun to see a good old fashioned recruiting battle unfolding right in front of us. Let’s see if Hammerschmidt and crew can hold on.

The Ugly: Do a quick Google image search for Kiel Robinson and the second result is this:

Feast your eyes, ladies!
